Former Oregon State football player Joe Francis, who played with the Beavers in the 1957 Rose Bowl, died April 15 in Hawaii. He was 76.

Joseph Charles Naekauna Francis Jr., played at OSU from 1954-57. He started at left halfback and rushed for 73 yards in the Jan. 1, 1957 Rose Bowl, a 35-19 loss to Iowa.

In 1957, he won the Pop Warner Award as the outstanding senior player on the Pacific Coast and the Hayward Award as the outstanding athlete in Oregon.

Francis was drafted in the fifth round by the Green Bay Packers as a quarterback. He played there in 1958-59 and with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League from 1961-62.

Francis also coached football and taught at Pearl City High. His son, Jon Francis, was a Corvallis High graduate and played football at Boise State and the Los Angeles Rams.

    Thanks for the memory Joe.

    Always will remember that Rose Bowl. The 1st Rose Bowl this "kid" watched.
