WACO, Texas — James Madison scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to hand the Oregon State softball team a tough 3-2 loss in the first game of the Waco Regional on Friday afternoon.

The Beavers will now fall into to the loser’s bracket of the double-elimination tournament and must win four straight games to advance to a super regional.

OSU will face Kent State, a 1-0 loser to Baylor, at 1:30 p.m. in an elimination game.

Taylor Newton delivered a two-out single in the seventh to lift James Madison to the win. The Dukes will now face Baylor at 11 a.m.

The loser of that game will face the winner of OSU's game at 4 p.m. in an elimination game.

The Beavers (28-26) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

McKenna Arriola lead off with a bunt single and Jessica Garcia had an infield single to third before Shelby Weeks reached on a fielder’s choice with Garcia being forced at second.

Alysha Everett grounded out to first for the second out with Weeks taking second and Arriola holding a third.

Natalie Hampton delivered a two-run double to left-center for the quick lead.

However, the Beavers would collect just two more hits the rest of the game.

James Madison used a bases-loaded single in the fourth to cut the deficit to 2-1 and then tied it up on a solo home run by Madyson Moran in the sixth.

Taylor Cotton took the loss for Oregon State, going 6⅔ innings and allowing three runs on seven hits. The senior lefty (14-10) walked three and struck out five.

Megan Good went the distance for the Dukes (51-6), striking out eight without a walk, to improve to 37-1.
