LAFAYETTE, La. — The Oregon State softball team could not keep pace with No. 16 Louisiana-Lafayette and fell 9-4 in the nonconference road game.
The Beavers (4-2) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Missy Nunes homered to center, but the Ragin' Cajuns came back with three in the bottom of the inning.
Louisiana-Lafayette then added two in the third and three in the fourth for a commanding 8-1 lead.
The Beavers cut into the deficit in the fifth when Shelby Weeks sent a shot over the left-center fence and scored three. But that was all the Beavers could muster on the day.
Oregon State loaded the bases with two outs after that point, but a timely pitching change from the Ragin’ Cajuns made the difference as Kylee Jo Trahan relieved Summer Ellyson and came up with the crucial strikeout to end the threat.
Louisiana-Lafayette added the final run in the bottom of the sixth to cap the scoring. Freshman Mariah Mazon (1-2) took the loss in the circle with a pair of strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched.
The Beavers finished with eight hits and four RBIs. Chance Burden went 2 for 3 for OSU.
OSU now heads to Baton Rouge for the Purple and Gold Challenge hosted by LSU.
The Beavers will begin play on Friday with games against Central Arkansas and Southern Utah.
On Saturday, the Beavers will take on Louisiana Tech and No. 7 LSU.
