BATON ROUGE, La. — The Oregon State softball team swept Central Arkansas and Southern Utah on the first day of the Purple and Gold Challenge.
The Beavers (6-2) took a 1-0 win over Central Arkansas and defeated Southern Utah 6-1.
“I thought we were a little slow and didn’t hit as well as I hoped for these past two games,” said OSU coach Laura Berg, “But they were wins and I’ll take all the wins I can get.”
Meehra Nelson struck out 12 and allowed two hits in the first game.
The Beavers scored their run in the second inning after loading the bases. Chance Burden scored Alysha Everett on a sacrifice fly for what would turn out to be the game winner.
Oregon State’s bats had more pop against Southern Utah as junior Shelby Weeks sent a two-out RBI double in the third that plated Burden, while freshman Hope Brandner came up with a three-run home run to left field for a 4-1 OSU lead.
Brandner added an RBI single in the fifth.
Pitcher Mariah Mazon struck out seven for OSU.
The Beavers will face Louisiana Tech and No. 7 LSU in the tourney on Saturday.
