The Oregon State wrestling team got a technical fall from senior 133-pounder Joey Palmer but fell 33-11 to No. 21 Arizona State on Sunday in a Pac-12 dual at Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers (4-7, 2-1) won three of the 10 matches. But the Sun Devils (8-4, 1-1) took two toss-up bouts and scored 12 bonus points on three pins, a technical fall and a major decision for the decisive decision.
Palmer thumped ASU’s Ted Rico 19-4 in the second bout to give the Beavers a 5-3 lead. He improved to 20-5 with his second bonus-point win of the weekend; he majored Josh Newberg 18-6 in OSU’s victory at Boise State on Friday night.
Redshirt junior Jack Hathaway (141) and redshirt sophomore Corey Griego (197) also prevailed for OSU. Hathaway edged Nikko Villareal 3-2, and Griego just missed a major decision with an 11-4 triumph over Austyn Harris.
“We knew we had to win at 125 and at 149 to have a shot at them,” OSU coach Jim Zalesky said. “We didn’t win the matches we had to win to take the dual.
“They have four or five guys who are pretty tough. So we knew we had to win the other matches, where we matched up better with them, but we didn’t.
“The biggest thing was giving up too many back points in the matches we lost. When you do that, it is hard to win duals. We have to do a better job of not going to our back in those situations.”
Zalesky said redshirt junior David Henry started at heavyweight against No. 7 Tanner Hall in place of redshirt junior Cody Crawford because Henry needed an opportunity to see what he could do against top-flight competition after winning several open tournaments.
“He’s fought hard, but he probably needs more match time,” Zalesky said.
A three-time 2A state champion at Oakland High, Henry played football at OSU for three seasons before taking a medical retirement during the 2015 season. He joined the wrestling team this fall and took first place at the Boxer and Clackamas opens, and second place at the Reno Tournament of Champions and the California Collegiate Open.
The Beavers conclude the Pac-12 season next weekend with home duals against Cal Poly and Cal State Bakersfield. They face the Mustangs at 3 p.m. on Friday and the Roadrunners at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
