Legion baseball banquet

The American Legion Post 11 will induct three people into the Corvallis Legion baseball Hall of Fame at a banquet on Wednesday.

Bill Dixon, John Landers and Chris Kunda will be honored with induction into the Hall of Fame.

The banquet starts at 6 p.m. and will be held at the Moose Hall at 2240 SW 3rd St. Admission is free and there will be standard ballpark fare for a price.

Knights add four

The Corvallis Knights of the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League have added four players from San Diego State for the upcoming season, coach Brooke Knight announced Thursday.

They are projected starting pitchers Nate Solow, a sophomore left-hander, and junior-college transfers Jon Berger and James McLaughlin, who are junior right-handers.

Solow, a graduate of La Cueva High in Albuquerque, was 3-1, 4.50 in 30 innings in 2007. Berger is from Las Vegas and pitched at the Community College of Southern Nevada in 2007; McLaughlin is from Solona Beach, Calif., and pitched at Palomar, Calif., JC in 2007.

The Knights also added sophomore catcher Matt Parker of Rancho Bernardo High in San Diego. He hit .259, with no homers and 10 RBIs, in 58 at-bats.

Parks & Rec youth basketball

The Corvallis Parks & Recreation Department is registering players for its Youth Basketball Programs. The Introduction to Basketball Program (grades 1-2) meets on Saturday mornings from Jan. 26-March 1. The Elementary (grades 2-5) and Middle School (grades 6-8) programs practice one day each week right after school and play games on Saturdays from Jan. 14-March 15.

Registration is $25 for city residents and $30 for others. For more information, call 766-6918.

Volunteer coaches are also needed. The time commitment is four hours each week, one afternoon and on Saturday mornings. For more information, call Robert Thornberg at 754-1706 or check on the City of Corvallis Web site at www.ci.corvallis.or.us for a job description and volunteer application.
