DALLAS — The Gerding Builders American Legion baseball team suffered its first loss in Area III this season with a 2-1 loss to Post 20 out of West Salem/Dallas on Monday evening.
Jarrett Peterson, a junior this past spring at Dallas, had the game-winning hit with a single in the bottom of the 10th.
“Peterson on the first pitch he saw was jammed and he fisted the ball over a drawn-in infield,” Corvallis coach Kirk Myrold said.
Brandon Groat opened the 10th with a single and he moved into scoring position after the next batter was hit by a pitch to set up Peterson’s opportunity.
The Marketmen (5-4, 1-1) had a chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth by getting their first two batters aboard with no outs. But the Dirtbags escaped the jam to keep the game tied.
Trevor Young out of Monroe got the start for Gerding Builders.
“Young threw well,” Myrold said. “He scattered six hits and the one run they scored in the fourth, we committed three of our four errors in that inning.”
Post 20 is the first Legion team based out of Dallas in 10 years. Games are played at Dallas High. Six players on the roster competed for Salem Post 9 last year.
The Marketmen play at 6 p.m. today in Hillsboro against Northwest Star.
