The Sweet Home junior bettered her 2008 finish by 12 spots Saturday to take seventh in the 4A girls race at the OSAA cross country state meet at Lane Community College.

"I was trying to get in the top 10, so this is awesome," said Johnson, who placed 19th last year.

Johnson, who won the Val-Co League district meet a week earlier, finished the 5,000-meter (3.1-mile) course in 20 minutes, 27 seconds.

That helped Sweet Home take seventh in the 14-team field with 173 points.

Sweet Home coach Billy Snow said Johnson executed the gameplan.
