PHILOMATH - Philomath High had a chance to take the lead in the closing minutes but couldn't punch it in and dropped a tough 19-15 nonleague decision to Tillamook on Friday night.
Philomath had taken a 15-12 lead late in the third quarter when Dan Haynes punched it in from a yard out, but Tillamook's ground game tore up big chunks and Matt Beeler scored from a yard out with 9:43 left to put the Cheesemakers up for good.
"We had our opportunities down inside the 20, we just didn't punch it in a couple times," PHS coach Troy Muir said. "They controlled the ball and ran all over us."
Beeler had 92 yards on 19 carries and Brandon Thomas had 192 yards on 25 rushes for Tillamook.
Philomath (4-1) took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter when Haynes connected with Trevor Motter for a 36-yard scoring play.
But Tillamook responded with two third-quarter touchdown runs to go up 12-7.
