LEBANON - The Crescent Valley High boys basketball team used a stingy defense to hold off Silverton 48-42 in a playoff game for fourth place in the Mid-Willamette Conference at Lebanon High on Saturday.
The Raiders (15-10) advance to the 5A playoffs and travel to Crook County on Tuesday.
CV broke open an 18-18 game in the third, outscoring Silverton 14-6 in the quarter as Thomas McCarthy made all three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point shot, then hit a 3-pointer.
The Raiders built the lead to 11 early in the fourth before the Silver Foxes made a run. The Raiders hit 10 of 19 free throws in the fourth, but got the stops they needed.
"We played very, very good defense," CV coach Mike Stair said. "If it wasn't for Silverton making a very aggressive push in the fourth, we might have held them under 40."
The playoff appearance will be Stair's first in his three years at CV.
"I'm pretty happy," he said. "It's really rewarding after watching the kids put in the time and effort they have. We're 6-1 in our last seven games and when you play like that, you should be able to play a little extra basketball."
