Marissa Kovac scored twice and Crescent Valley shot past 6A Sheldon to claim a 5-0 victory on Thursday in a nonconference girls soccer game.

Meghan Drost had assists on both of Kovac's goals in the first half, then added an unassisted goal of her own in the second half.

"They're actually a big, physical side," CV coach Andrew Donaldson said of Sheldon. "The girls came to play today. They played very good football, or soccer. They created some great opportunities and then converted those."

The Raiders (2-0) host Liberty on Sept. 13.

Boys soccer

PHILOMATH - Chris Senick scored twice and had an assist as Seaside defeated Philomath 3-1 in a nonleague boys soccer match.

"It was a good test for us," PHS coach Shawn Bond said. "It was a pretty even match throughout."

The Warriors (0-2) tied the match in the 25th minute when Morgan Foster converted a penalty kick, but Senick scored the winning goal unassisted in the 46th minute to put the Seagulls ahead for good.

The defending Val-Co League champions, the Warriors are still getting acquainted with the rigors of varsity soccer.

"We lost a lot of seniors last year," Bond said. "We're still getting players to figure out how to play at the varsity level.

"Later in the season I think we would have a different outcome with them."
