Val-Co champs fall in quarters

Stayton High built a 15-point lead in the first half and was able to cruise past Newport for a 52-32 victory on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the OSAA 4A girls basketball tournament at Gill Coliseum.

Kelsey Atkins led the Eagles (19-11) with 25 points, seven rebounds, four assists, five steals and one blocked shot, while Amanda Mack added 10 points, three assists and three steals.

Stayton has won five straight playoff games - two in the Capital Conference - after struggling to a .500 conference finish. The game with the Cubs (21-5) is the only blowout in that run.

Newport was led by Rylee Peterson with 18 points and eight rebounds, but the senior Val-Co League all-star also fouled out. The Cubs hurt themselves with 20 turnovers, including one team turnover, and committed 23 fouls.

Stayton opened the game with a 13-4 first quarter and was up 31-16 at the half.

Stayton will play Sutherlin/Cottage Grove in the semifinals on Thursday, while Newport faces Cottage Grove/Sutherlin this morning in a consolation semifinal.

Hidden Valley 46, Ontario 33

The Mustangs never trailed en route to the victory over the Greater Oregon League champions.

Hidden Valley (22-4) had three players finish in double figures, topped by Jamie Richardson with 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Hale Fisko had 14 points and eight rebounds and Laura Silva had 12 points. Megan Swanson grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Tigers (23-3) got nine points from Alla Dzhidzhiyeshvil, but shot just 27.5 percent from the field (11 of 40) and were outrebounded 30-17.

Ontario will play Seaside this morning in the consolation semifinals, while Hidden Valley meets Marist in the semifinals on Thursday.

Marist 45, Seaside 29

Marshall King had 14 points and 14 rebounds to lead Marist past the Seagulls.

King also had five assists and two steals in 31 minutes. Lydia Gust added 12 points and three boards in just 13 minutes for the Spartans (18-6).

Seaside (20-9) got 14 points, two assists and four steals from Marla Olstedt.

Marist never trailed and led 23-12 at the half.

Sutherlin 38, Cottage Grove 32

Fifth-ranked Sutherlin broke a fourth-quarter tie and ended the game with an 11-5 run to defeat No. 2 Cottage Grove.

Sutherlin (21-5) scored five straight points after Cottage Grove (21-5) had tied the game at 27-27 with 6:40 remaining.

The Bulldogs took the lead for good on a lay-in by Tess Bennett with 5:56 left. Two baskets by Amanda Hutchings in the final 1:30 helped the Bulldogs hold on.

Bennett had 14 points and six rebounds and Hutchings added eight points and 11 rebounds for Sutherlin.

Reed Levings scored 15 points for Cottage Grove.

Cottage Grove shot 12-of-45 from the field, while Sutherlin was 13-of-34. Sutherlin had a 34-21 rebounding advantage.

Sutherlin moves on to play Stayton in a Thursday semifinal.
