Danny Alig carried the Corvallis High baseball team with both his arm and his bat on Friday afternoon.
The senior pitched a complete game shutout and drove in two runs to lead the Spartans to a 6-0 Mid-Willamette Conference victory over Crescent Valley at Taylor Field.
CHS (3-0 MWC) earned a three-game sweep of the Raiders (0-3) with the win.
"I think our kids put three good games together against a quality baseball. team," Spartans coach Eric Dazey said. "So I am very pleased they were able to do that."
Added Alig: "This was defintely the game to beat them because they really wanted this game. It feels really good to sweep them this year because this is the second year we have done the three-game series thing and we finally got them three games in a row."
Alig limited CV to two hits while striking out five. More telling was the fact the Raiders didn't get a baserunner in scoring position against him after the second inning.
"I felt really good out there," Alig said. "I am glad it went the way it did. I just went out there and did what I have been practicing."
In the second, Jake Likewise walked and Josh Liebeskind was hit by a pitch and Van Fudge hit into a fielder's choice, moving the runners up a base. But CV was unable to captilize on the opportunity as Kiel Larkin grounded out and Scott Stone flied out to end the threat.
Libeskind and Nate Pozzesi were the only Raiders to manage hits off Alig, both singles.
"They are a playoff-caliber team," CV coach David Mintken said. "They made plays and their pitcher came out and threw strikes. We are trying to get to get to the playoffs, so we got to beat teams like that to do that."
Mintken said his starter, Thomas McCarthy, pitched well enough to win, but the Raiders didn't back him up at the plate. As a result, it was tough to get any momentum.
That wasn't an issue for CHS though. Alig hit a sac fly in the first inning to drive home Ben Northcutt and give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. He added an RBI double in the third that scored Nothercutt again and increased his team's lead to 2-0.
But it was in the fifth inning that the Spartans broke open the game and chased McCarthy from the game.
After Cory England popped out to lead off the inning, Northcutt was hit by a pitch. McCarthy then threw the ball away on a pickoff attempt which allowed Northcutt to move to second. He touched home when Nate Williams doubled to give CHS a 3-0 lead.
Aaron Corwin followed that with a double of his own that scored Williams to make it 4-0 and knock McCarthy out of the game. Corwin advanced to third on the throw home.
Likewise relieved McCarthy and got Alig to fly out for the second out of the inning. But Adam Zweber singled to bring home Corwin and give the Spartans a 5-0 advantage.
"We've been working on putting good swings on fastballs," Dazey said. "I thought throughout the ballgame and the series our kids were aggressive."
