Syree Gerner had 23 points and four other players scored in double figures on Friday night in Corvallis High's 80-40 victory over McKay in a girls basketball game at CHS.

Whitney Redberg, Leslie Robinson and Jenny Schmidt had 11 points apiece and Maddi Bartholomew added 10 for the Spartans (2-0). Sara Smee had 15 rebounds and Robinson had eight steals.

"We shared the ball well and played good defense," said coach Mark James, whose team was never challenged after building a 22-11 first-quarter lead.

The Spartans play at North Eugene on Monday.

YAMHILL - Philomath High trailed 7-0 in its season opener but rallied strongly to defeat Yamhill-Carlton in a nonconference game.

Rylee Marshall had 19 points and five steals, Alison Jensen had 14 points, Kayla Thorsness had 11 rebounds and six points and Tegan Grunwald had nine rebounds and eight points for the Warriors.

PHS led 14-9 after the first quarter and 30-21 at halftime. It outscored the Tigers 19-13 in the third quarter to break the game open.

"It's nice to win your first one," coach Amy Leonard said. "It was a good way to start off the season. We started off slow but once we settled down we started to click and the girls played well."

Philomath plays at Gladstone on Tuesday.

WALDPORT - Emilie Kessi scored 18 points and had 14 rebounds and Emily Griner added 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists as the Eagles rolled to the PacWest Conference win.

Darci Woods added nine steals for the Eagles (3-0, 2-0) who host Portland Adventist at 7 p.m. tonight.
