Timely defense allowed Corvallis High to escape two big threats and the Spartans took advantage in a 9-3 Mid-Willamette Conference win over Silverton on Wednesday.

The Spartans (22-4, 18-2) turned an inning-ending double play in the fourth after the Silver Foxes had loaded the bases.

Silverton scored one in the fifth to cut the Spartans' lead to 4-3, but CHS pitcher Aaron Corwin tossed back-to-back strikeouts with the bases loaded to end the inning.

"In my mind that helped carry over to our half of the fifth," CHS coach Eric Dazey said.

Corvallis put the game away in the bottom of the inning with five runs on six hits and two walks. Ben Northcutt had a two-run double in the inning.

"We did a good job of stringing some hits together there and generating some runs to separate a little bit," Dazey said.

Corvallis plays at Silverton on Friday.
