Coming off a season in which it didn't win a Mid-Willamette Conference dual meet, the Crescent Valley High wrestling team couldn't have asked for a better start to the conference slate.
The Raiders (3-2, 1-0) jumped out to 15-0 lead after three matches and never looked back en route to a 45-21 victory over crosstown rival Corvallis on Thursday night at Raider Gym.
"It means a lot to the kids," CV coach Brendan Courtot said. "It also means a lot to the other people who have put an effort into this program, our coaches and the parents.
"I think it really means a lot to them because it shows all this stuff, sending their kids to camp and making sure their kids get to practice, does pay off."
Pins by Devin Keefer and Tyler Burkum and an 11-3 decision by Christian Strahl gave the Raiders an early 15-0 advantage.
Strahl, ranked No. 17 in the state at 119 pounds, upset No. 10 Ruben Almazan, 11-3. It was sweet redemption for Strahl, who lost to Almazan, 20-8, last weekend at the Willamette Tournament.
"Last weekend I was off my form a little bit," Strahl said. "So I picked up the pace this time. I warmed up properly and kept the pressure on him and didn't let up."
CHS (3-2, 0-1) got on the board when Will Parke-Hoffman took an 18-16 overtime decision against Travis Bender. Parke-Hoffman rallied from a third-round 12-7 deficit.
He got a takedown in the final seconds of the round to tie the score at 16 and force overtime. In the extra round, Parke-Hoffman earned two points as time expired again to earn the win.
"The guy I was facing was really tough," Parke-Hoffman said. "I got lucky in OT and won. We really needed a win and the first one gives us momentum."
Josiah Wai then pinned Jason Rizk and Gunnar Cox followed that up with a 6-3 decision to pull the Spartans within 15-12. But that was the closest they would get the rest of the meet.
Cody Derrick earned a 7-6 decision over Allen Arnold at 140 pounds to begin a string of four straight wins by the Raiders, which halted CHS's momentum and put the meet away for CV.
"A dual meet is all about the swing in momentum," Spartans coach Nathan Harris said. "To get the momentum back on our side was great but they kept the momentum in their place the whole night."
