Pass the Pepcid and expect Corvallis High to work even harder on special teams in practices to come.
With Chris Henry rushing for 194 yards, Kevin Younger throwing for 247 and the defense limiting No. 4 Dallas to 187 yards in total offense, the Spartans posted a 42-28 Mid-Willamette Conference victory on Friday night at Spartan Stadium.
"Well, I've said it before and I'll say it again: we're getting better and we'll continue to get better, but we still have to take care of a lot of business," CHS coach Chris McGowan said. "The kids know that and they're growing."
Given the offense's productivity and the defense's dominance, Corvallis had to help the Dragons get back in the game after leading 28-7 at the half and 35-7 with 8:24 left in the third quarter.
And that's just what the Spartans (2-2, 1-0) did.
Dallas (3-1, 0-1) got its first touchdown late in the first half after forcing the Spartans into a punting situation. A high snap sailed over Bo Christianson's head and the senior punter could only fall on the ball at the 13.
Three plays later, Dallas had a touchdown.
"I had a feeling going in at halftime that this team (Dallas) wasn't going to quit and that just one or two breaks and they'd be back in it," McGowan said.
Trailing 35-7, the Dragons caught another break on a fourth-and-4 at the CHS 18. Flagged for procedure, the drive should have been all but over, however, Corvallis got a personal foul penalty on the nonplay and Dallas had new life with a first down at the 11.
Eric Brewster scored on the next play.
Then the floodgates of breaks seemed to swing the Dragons' way.
CHS lost a fumble at its own 37 and nine plays later Ron Snively threw the second of his three TD passes.
Another bad snap in punt formation gave Dallas the ball at the 7. After a penalty, Snively made it a one-touchdown game on a 15-yard pass with 5:40 to play.
With the Spartans' offense in a funk - they went three-and-out - Dallas was 48 yards from tying the game with 4:35 remaining.
At that point the Spartans defense swung the tide, starting with Newt Alvis' interception at the 50. Dallas' final five offensive plays resulted in three interceptions, a sack and a batted pass.
Henry scored the clinching TD with 2:24 to play, following the blocks of Nate Williams and Kevin Leahy to daylight en route to a 43-yard run.
"My line stepped it up," Henry said. "We knew we had to do that to beat Dallas. This is league play now, preseason is over."
Younger had four TD passes - three to Daryl Watkins, who gained 141 yards on those three catches.
"The nice thing is, to make as many mistakes as we did in the kicking game, to still get the victory and establish a bit of a run game and pass it fairly well," McGowan said. "After the blood pressure comes down, it's a good win."
Corvallis plays at Woodburn next Friday while Dallas will host Crescent Valley.
