PENDLETON — The top-seeded Monroe High girls basketball team overcame a three-point fourth-quarter deficit Thursday afternoon to defeat No. 9 Regis 47-43 in the OSAA 2A state quarterfinals at Pendleton Convention Center.
The Dragons (27-0) will face No. 5 Imbler (16-6) at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. The Panthers took out 13th-seeded Weston-McEwen 48-36 earlier in the day.
Monroe scored the game’s first 13 points but fell behind 36-33 on a Genevieve Frith bucket with 7:51 remaining. A Rose Gwillim jumper in the paint with 1:13 to go put the Dragons up for good at 42-40.
Madison Ballard was 5 of 6 from the foul line to close it out.
Ballard, a junior, led the Dragons with 18 points and three assists. Emily Stahl added 12 points and eight rebounds while Gwillim had four points, 14 rebounds and three assists.
Monroe outrebounded Regis 39-31 and had 15 offensive boards.
Kirsten Koehnke recorded 18 points and six rebounds for the Rams (15-12), who will play Weston-McEwen at 9 a.m. Friday in the consolation bracket.
