SALEM — The Corvallis High boys basketball team fell to 6A Clackamas 59-42 on Thursday in the opening round of the Capitol City Classic at Willamette University.
The Spartans (3-4) resume tournament action against Red Mountain, Arizona, at 3 p.m. Friday. Red Mountain lost to Lincoln on Thursday in its first-round game.
South Salem 85, Crescent Valley 62
SALEM — The Raiders traveled to 6A South Salem and fell to the Saxons in the nonleague game.
Tariq Harris had 23 points and Preston Heede 17 for the Raiders (2-5), who shot 56 percent from the field.
CV (2-5) resumes nonleague play against Hermiston on Dec. 29 at the CV Invitational.
Monroe 80, Vernonia 73
ST. PAUL — The Dragons topped Vernonia in the opening day of the St. Paul Tournament. Monroe (4-3) plays St. Paul at 7 p.m. Friday in its next game.
Brian Goracke had 27 points, seven assists and five rebounds and Zach Young had 27 points, eight assists and seven rebounds to pace the Dragons.
"It was a good night, pretty exciting basketball to watch," Monroe coach Chad Goracke said.
Monroe plays St. Paul at 7 p.m. Friday to close the tournament.
Santiam Christian 72, Phoenix 42
MEDFORD — Zach Baugher had 41 points to lead the Eagles past Phoenix in the opening round of the Southern Oregon Suburu Christmas Classic at Cascade Christian.
Zeke Gilbert added 12 points for SC, which advanced to Friday's semifinals against Cascade Christian.
Mountain View 67, Philomath 50
ELMIRA — The Warriors fell to 5A Mountain View at the Elmira Tournament. Philomath (3-4) resumes tournament action against Sweet Home at 12:30 p.m. Friday.
Corvallis High built a 38-26 lead over the first three quarters and held on to top Rex Putnam 50-40 in a nonleague game at Spartan Gym.
Maranda Tucker had 12 points, Krysta Wilson 11 and Jordan Taylor 10 for the Spartans (2-5), who snapped a three-game losing streak.
CHS resumes play on Dec. 27 against Gladstone at the Cascade Tournament in Turner.
Crescent Valley 57, Thurston 42
SPRINGFIELD — Cali McClave had 24 points and Peyton Dale and Gwen Gray eight apiece to lead the Raiders to the nonleague win. CV (6-1) resumes nonleague play against Ashland at the CV Tournament on Dec. 29.
Monroe 66, Vernonia 33
ST. PAUL — Peyton Greene poured in 29 points to spark the Dragons to the win at the St. Paul Tournament.
Monroe (6-1) led 22-5 at the end of the first quarter.
Monroe coach Tony Parker said Greene had one of those games where it seemed like the ball always went to her in good position and she took advantage.
He said Greene shot nearly 70 percent from the field.
"She finished really well today," Parker said. "She just did not miss."
Madison Ballard added 16 points and 10 assists for the Dragons, who will take on St. Paul on Friday.
"We've started to figure things out," Parker said. "We're making that extra pass and finding better shots than we had been earlier in the season."
Ashland 45, Santiam Christian 32
MEDFORD — Ashland held off Santiam Christian at the Southern Oregon Suburu Christmas Classic at Cascade Christian. The Eagles (1-5) play in the tournament again on Saturday.
Philomath 66, Harrisburg 36
ELMIRA — Emma Pankalla and Lauren Berklund had 16 points apiece to lead Philomath by Harrisburg at the Elmira Tournament.
The Warriors led 36-19 at halftime and cruised home as they outscored Harrisburg in every quarter.
Philomath resumes tournament play against Douglas on Friday.
