BEAVERTON — Philomath High’s run through the OSAA 4A girls soccer playoffs came to an end on Tuesday night.

The No. 11-seeded Warriors suffered a 4-0 semifinal loss at No. 10 seed Valley Catholic.

It’s the second straight year the Valiants have eliminated the Warriors in the postseason.

Last year, Valley Catholic, then the No. 2 seed, beat No. 10 seed Philomath, 1-0, in the quarterfinals.

The Valiants scored three times in the first half. Callie Kawaguchi scored off an assist from Taylor Menkens before the two teamed up again, this time with Menkens scoring.

A late first-half goal by Kate MacNaughton made it 3-0 and it stayed that way until midway through the second half.

Philomath head coach Mat Phelps said the Valiants were persistent in their attack and kept his team from getting a rhythm. He said the Warriors had a good chance early on with Malia Taufaasau and Carrie Lillis combining to attack, but the goalie made a sliding save to stop Lillis' shot.

Phelps said his team never quit and battled to score a goal throughout the second half.

Philomath reached the semifinals by upsetting No. 6 Gladstone, 2-1, and No. 3 Scappoose, 1-0, before falling to Valley Catholic.

The Valiants reached the semis by upsetting No. 7 Junction City, 4-0, and No. 2 North Valley, 3-1.

Valley Catholic returns to the title game where it lost last year. The Valiants will take on No. 9 seed Hidden Valley.

Philomath had its five-game winning streak snapped and finishes the season 10-6-2.
