PHILOMATH — It came down to the final match for the Philomath High wrestling team on Tuesday in a 37-33 dual victory over Cottage Grove.
Junior heavyweight Ryan Duenas pinned his opponent in 2 minutes, 19 seconds to give the Warriors a win in dramatic fashion. The Warriors trailed by two points heading into the dual's finale.
Two freshmen had key victories with Tony Rath (113 pounds) and Joey Howell (138). Dillon Donnell (132), Nate Burkus (170) and Taylor Kohn (182) also had victories.
Duenas jumped out to a 2-0 lead on takedown 44 seconds into his match against Cottage Grove's Elijah Farrell. But his opponent scored on a reversal just 12 seconds later. By the end of the first period, Duenas had a 3-2 lead with an escape at the 40-second mark.
Duenas immediately took control in the second period and stuck his opponent just 19 seconds in.
