WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Oregon State sophomore forward Danny Mwanga was named the Pacific-10 Conference's Player of the Year on Tuesday. He is the first OSU men's soccer player to be so honored.

A native of Portland and the 2008 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, Mwanga led the conference in points (30), points per game (1.67), goals (14), goals per game (0.78) and game-winning goals (5). He was also a first-team all-star.

"Obviously Danny is very deserving of the award and he'll tell you that the only thing missing from this year is a NCAA tournament appearance," OSU coach Steve Simmons said. "He represents Oregon State very well and goes at it in a business-like manner.

"He is a great teammate and player and makes other better. I am so pleased for Danny."

Mwanga's goals, points, and shots (64) are the most for any Beaver since 2002, when Alan Gordon, now of the Los Angeles Galaxy, had 15 goals, 34 points, and 73 shots.

He was also named Player of the Week for the second week in a row for scoring twice and assisting in OSU's 3-2, season-ending victory over Washington on Nov. 14.

OSU sophomore midfielder Colin Mitchell was second-team all-league; Chris Harms, Chris Miller, Tanner French, and Steve Spangler earned honorable mention.

UCLA's Amobi Okugo was Freshman of the Year; Stanford's Bret Simon was Coach of the Year.
