PHS band champion directors

Erica Epperley, above, and Dan Johnson, below right, directed the PHS band to state titles in back-to-back years.

Philomath High's winning of the state band title last night was certainly an exciting event to cover. It doesn't get any better than listening to the OSAA officials award the trophies with the state champion announced last.

On my drive over to OSU to cover the event, I had wondered to myself in the car if a school had ever won back-to-back titles with different band directors. Of course in Philomath's case, that would be Dan Johnson in 2018 and Erica Epperley in 2019. So I looked it up.

According to the OSAA archives, it has happened once before in the classification in which Philomath has competed. South Umpqua in 2004 won the state title under Lloyd Smith and then repeated in 2005 under the direction of Nathan Parker. But that was during the days of 3A.

So since 2007 when 4A was established, Philomath is the only school to pull off that particular feat.

Anyway, congratulations to Philomath High on winning the right to hang another state championship banner in the auditorium.
