Philomath's annual tree-lighting ceremony coming Dec. 2

Philomath tree lighting 2018

The star burns bright at the top of Philomath's community Christmas tree in 2018.

Philomath will get into the Christmas spirit this coming Monday evening with the 13th annual Christmas tree-lighting ceremony on the lawn of the Benton County Historical Museum.

Hot chocolate and cookies, holiday music, Santa Claus and counting down the seconds to the lighting of the tree are highlights of the community event, which is scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m. rain or shine.

The Philomath Area Chamber of Commerce serves as host for the tree-lighting ceremony. Those in attendance can take the chill of the evening off with hot cocoa and cookies provided by the neighboring College United Methodist Church. Eats & Treats also provides gluten-free cookies.

Santa Claus plans to arrive with the help of Philomath Fire & Rescue’s Old No. 1 engine with an escort by the Philomath Police Department. He’ll be accompanied by Philomath Frolic & Rodeo queen Mallory Stokes.

The Philomath Elementary School choir will perform. The Corvallis Knights baseball team's Mack the Knight and Lil' King will also make an appearance.

Besides the museum and the chamber, Oregon State Credit Union is donating candy canes for Santa to pass out, Philomath Rental is providing lighting, and Shonnard’s Nursery and Pacific Power put the Christmas lights on the tree, a noble fir planted in 2008.

The schedule shows the countdown to the lighting to occur at 6:45 p.m.
