PHS baseball: Marshall Brattain

PHS senior Marshall Brattain allowed just two hits in Thursday's win over Woodburn.

The Philomath High School baseball team finished the regular season Thursday with a 5-1 victory over Woodburn.

In his final regular-season home appearance, senior Marshall Brattain threw a two-hitter to give the Warriors a 13-5 record in the Oregon West Conference, 16-10 overall. Philomath now awaits word on its postseason plans.

Through Friday, the Warriors were No. 10 in the OSAA rankings after winning four of their last five games. The team is tied with Sweet Home for second place in the conference standings, but the Huskies won the season series with that come-from-behind 3-2 victory back on April 13 in the completion of a game that had been suspended.

Philomath’s offense had scored 32 runs in the first two game against Woodburn but got off to a slow start in the series finale. The Warriors got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Brooks Stearns singled, moved to third on a Michael Slater single and scored on a Dylan Bennett sacrifice fly to center field.

Woodburn tied the game in the top of the sixth following an untimely error with two outs.

But Philomath responded in the bottom half with four runs. Stearns opened the inning with a double and Slater followed with a single. Stearns scored on a Bennett grounder to the right side.

Brattain then drove in Slater with a single, stole second and scored himself on a Calvin Snuggerud single. The speedy Snuggerud came all the way around to score himself on stolen bases.

In the seventh, Brattain set down Woodburn 1-2-3, the final two outs coming on strikeouts.

Brattain threw 106 pitches in the complete-game performance with a line that included two hits, no earned runs and one walk allowed with eight strikeouts.

At the plate, Stearns and Slater both finished 2 for 3 and Bennett had a pair of RBIs.
