PHS softball: Riley Weaver

Philomath second baseman Riley Weaver makes a play in a game from last week. The Warriors defeated Cascade Thursday, 2-0, behind exceptional pitching and defense.

The Philomath High School softball team continued its winning streak to open Oregon West Conference play with Thursday’s 2-0 victory over visiting Cascade.

The Warriors are off to a 3-0 start in the league with pitching and defense highlighting the last two. For the second straight afternoon, sophomore Kamden Combs shutdown an opposing team. Against the Cougars, Combs threw a complete-game two-hitter with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Philomath broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth. Kaili Saathoff opened the inning with a single and moved to second and then third on grounders by Amie Russell and Ashley Matthews. Kylee Galvan put the ball in play with two outs and reached on an error while Saathoff scored.

In the fifth, Philomath added another run to its lead. Riley Weaver and Reagan Larson both had singles to get some offense going. Williams later hit a grounder to shortstop and Cascade went for the out at first while Weaver scored.

Cascade pitcher Mackenzie Dysinger had a quality outing for the visitors with a complete-game four-hitter with no walks and seven strikeouts. The Cougars did struggle in the field with four errors.

Philomath (4-2 overall) steps out of the conference Saturday for a game against defending state champion La Grande, the team that eliminated the Warriors from last year’s Class 4A playoffs in the semifinals. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start on the PHS field.
