The Philomath High School baseball team had a rough outing in its season opener Wednesday with a 12-2 loss at Hidden Valley in a game limited to five innings.

The Warriors appeared to struggle in the areas of pitching and defense. Hidden Valley collected 13 hits and Philomath had five errors in the game.

Hidden Valley, a Skyline Conference team out of Grants Pass that went 19-8 last season, was also playing its season opener with a game scheduled earlier in the week against Elmira canceled.

Philomath trailed 5-0 when it broke through on the scoreboard in the top of the third. Sophomore Adam Hernandez opened the inning by working a walk, advanced to second on a single by senior Michael Slater, made it to third while the Mustangs turned a double play and scored on a single by junior Brian McClelland.

Philomath scored another run in the fifth inning. Freshman Cameron Ordway doubled, reached third on a Hernandez ground-out to second and scored on a single by senior Brooks Stearns.

Stearns and senior Marshall Brattain each had two hits for the Warriors. Along with Ordway’s two-bagger, Stearns also had a double in his first plate appearance of the season in the first.

On the mound, Brattain and senior Brandn Vogler both saw innings.

Philomath (0-1) is scheduled to play at home Friday against Henley.
