PHS boys basketball: Ben Reams

Philomath's Ben Reams, seen here in a home game last week, had the game-winning shot in Thursday's first-round game at the Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic in Ketchikan, Alaska. The Warriors fell to the host school in the semifinals on Friday and will try to secure third with a game Saturday against Palmer (Alaska).

Ketchikan High buried 11 3-pointers to beat Philomath 55-51 Friday night and to move into the championship game of its own tournament.

The King Salmon (5-1) shot out to a 20-10 lead in the first quarter but the Warriors stayed within striking distance over the final three quarters in the Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic semifinal.

PHS junior Toby Stueve scored 16 points on seven field goals and 2 of 3 free throws and senior Marshall Brattain scored 12 on six field goals for the Warriors.

Kristian Pihl scored 18 points, all on 3-pointers, to lead Ketchikan High. Often referred to as Kayhi, the school has an enrollment of approximately 600 students, about the same size as Cascade.

Philomath had moved into the semifinals with Thursday's overtime victory over Soldotna. In that one, Ben Reams hit a shot at the buzzer to give the Warriors the victory.

Philomath (7-3) will wrap up tournament play Saturday in the third-/fifth-place game.
