Les & Bob's baseball: Carson Gerding

Carson Gerding eyes the plate during a mound appearance earlier this summer. Gerding, who typically plays shortstop, has been one of several arms that coach Levi Webber has been trying out this summer during D1 games.

Playing Dallas Tuesday for the second time in three days, the Les & Bob’s D1 baseball team fared a bit better than the 6-0 loss it had endured Sunday on the final day of a home tournament.

This second matchup also went to Dallas but in a much more competitive game on the Dragons’ field as the home squad had to go to extra innings to defeat Philomath, 8-7. Based on the number of Philomath errors — seven on the evening — it appears as though Les & Bob’s might’ve beaten itself in this one.

Philomath got off to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Leadoff batter Garrett Blowers singled, stole second and scored on a Brian McCelland double. Dallas countered with single runs in the first, second, third and fourth innings to take a 4-1 lead into the fifth.

Les & Bob’s scored twice in that frame to cut the Dallas lead down to 4-3. Blowers got things going in the fifth with a one-out walk and after stealing second, he came around to score when Dylan Bennett reached on an error. Carson Gerding singled in Bennett for the inning’s second run.

Dallas put up three in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead to 7-3 but Philomath responded to the challenge by scoring four in the seventh.

Blowers reached with one out when he was hit by a pitch, Adam Hernandez followed with a single and Bennett reached on an error to load the bases for Gerding, who was hitting in the cleanup spot. Gerding came through with a clutch single to plate Blowers.

McClelland followed with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Hernandez but Philomath now had two outs and still trailed by two runs. Brody Hiner walked to load the bases and Blake Niemann delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single to tie the game.

In the bottom of the seventh, Dallas went down 1-2-3 on three infield pop-ups to send the game into the eighth. After Les & Bob’s couldn’t do much in the top half, Dallas ended the game in the bottom half without a hit. The first batter bunted and reached on an error to end up at second and then stole third. The next batter walked and the winning run came across on another error.

Blowers finished 2 for 3 with three runs scored while Gerding was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. McClelland and Niemann also drove in two runs apiece.

On the mound, Gerding went four innings and allowed four hits, one earned run and four walks with five strikeouts. McClelland struck out two in one inning of work with Hernandez and Niemann finishing up the last two frames.

Philomath (4-5) will try to stop a three-game skid with a Monday home game against Silverton. The team will then host McNary for a doubleheader on Tuesday that begins at 4 p.m.
