PHS baseball: Cameron Ordway

Cameron Ordway, seen here last week against Henley, had a walk-off game-winning single in bottom half to beat Stayton Monday.

Freshman Cameron Ordway's one-out walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Philomath to a 4-3 victory Monday over Stayton in the Oregon West Conference baseball opener for both schools.

Ordway's game-winner came on an 0-2 pitch and brought home junior Dylan Bennett, who had opened the inning with a double and moved over to third on a Brandn Vogler sacrifice bunt.

In a game that remained close throughout, Philomath trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the third before pushing a run across. Ordway actually broke up a perfect game at that point in the game with a single and he came around to score on a triple by senior Michael Slater.

In the fifth, the Warriors took a 3-2 lead on a two-run single by senior Calvin Snuggerud. Bennett, who had reached on an error, and junior Brody Hiner, who had doubled, both scored on the play.

Stayton tied the game in the top of the sixth. In the seventh, Stayton's leadoff batter singled but he was caught stealing. The inning ended on a double play with a base runner called out for interference.

Ordway finished 2 for 3 and six other players each had a hit, including the triple by Slater and the doubles by Hiner and Bennett.

On the mound, senior Marshall Brattain got the start and went 5-2/3 innings, allowing 11 hits and two earned runs with two walks and one strikeout. Vogler, a senior, took over for the final 1-1/3 innings and allowed one hit and one walk while earning the victory.

Philomath (1-2 overall, 1-0 Oregon West) will face the Eagles again Wednesday in Stayton (2-2, 0-1).
