PHS boys basketball: Toby Stueve

Philomath's Toby Stueve, seen here against Sisters, scored 10 in Friday's win at Tillamook.

The Philomath boys basketball team won its seventh straight game on the road with Friday night’s 44-41 victory over Tillamook.

Free throws played a prominent role in the outcome of the nonconference matchup. The two teams combined attempted 56 foul shots while each making 11 baskets from the field.

Philomath (13-2) had to rally from a 23-16 halftime deficit to snag the victory. The Warriors labored through a poor-shooting second quarter with just one basket — a Ben Reams 3-pointer — and 1 of 5 on free throws.

The long-range shots worked in the opening quarter with Dylan Edwards sinking a couple along with one from Toby Stueve.

In the third quarter, Philomath erased the deficit and took a 28-27 lead into the fourth. Free throws were big with the Warriors making 7 of 10 to accompany a Michael Lundy trey and an Edwards hoop.

Then in the fourth, the Warriors got the job done with four different players making baskets in addition to 8 of 14 from the foul line.

Edwards ended up with a team-high 11 points while Stueve added 10.

Trask Veek-Petersen, a freshman guard, and Marshall Allen, a sophomore post, each scored 12 to lead the Cheesemakers (7-9).

The Warriors have won seven of eight on the road this season.

Philomath gets back into Oregon West Conference play Tuesday with a home game against Newport. The Warriors then head to Woodburn in a key league showdown on Friday night.
