The Philomath High School boys and girls tennis teams opened the season Thursday with decisive victories over South Albany.

The boys, playing on the courts at Ashbrook Independent School in Corvallis, won seven of eight matches. Philomath swept the singles' matches but two of those did go the distance. At No. 2 singles, James Erickson outlasted Connor Harless, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, and at No. 3, Nathaniel Workman held on to beat Junior Santos, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Colton Beckstead won in straight sets at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-2. And at No. 4, Noah Aynes lost only two games in a 6-2, 6-0 win.

Luke Haslam and Nick Stucki dominated at No. 1 doubles by losing just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory. The Warriors had the same result at No. 4 doubles with Bryce Beeton and Judah Bacho losing only one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win. In the No. 2 spot, Jeremy Alston and Dylan Bell won easily, 6-2, 6-0.

The lone loss of the day for the boys occurred at No. 3 doubles where Logan Wade and Filip Furuseth lost a close one to Veva and Vadium Hubenya, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

The girls also defeated South Albany by a 7-1 count. The Warriors dominated the doubles matches with all four duos winning in straight sets. The No. 3 team of Atira Fairbanks and Chloe Jurva were especially strong in a 6-0, 6-1 win. Amelia and Claire Skinkis at No. 2 were effective as well with a 6-2, 6-1 win.

The No. 1 doubles team of Lindsay Skinkis and Maddie Melton withstood a good challenge in a 6-4, 6-4 win. And in the No. 4 slot, Kena Bacho and Lily Schell defeated their opponents, 7-6, 6-0.

Philomath won three of the four singles matches. Selah Carlisle rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 spot. Emma Nelson battled to a 7-6, 6-4 victory at No. 3 and Ashlynn Wulk defeated her opponent, 6-3, 7-6 at No. 4.

The teams will next face Crescent Valley with the boys playing on the Raiders' courts and the girls hosting at Ashbrook.
