PHS boys soccer: Mark Grimmer

Philomath's Mark Grimmer, seen here last season, scored twice Saturday against Gladstone.

Philomath set the tone in the opening seconds.

The Warriors scored on their first possession of the game from the kick-off, added another in the 10th minute and didn’t budget on defense in a 2-0 victory Saturday over visiting Gladstone.

The victory evens Philomath High School’s record at 1-1 after the Warriors had endured a tough 3-2 loss in the season opener two days earlier.

Mark Grimmer, a sophomore forward, scored both goals. On the first one, Philomath kicked off at the opening whistle, made four passes and junior Nick Stucki found Grimmer, who finished at about 20 seconds in.

Gladstone’s first touch of the ball was fishing it out of the back of the net.

“We’re dangerous; our forwards are strong,” PHS coach Dave Ellis said. “We’re sorting through some defensive transition issues. We’re already playing better soccer than last year.”

Grimmer scored the second goal on a flick from junior Julius Hoffman.

Gladstone (0-2) opened with a 5-0 loss to Stayton, which was later changed to a 1-0 forfeit because the Gladiators used an ineligible player.

Philomath now turns its attention to an early Oregon West Conference matchup against Stayton. The contest is scheduled for a 4:15 p.m. start Tuesday on the Warriors’ home field.
