The Philomath High School boys soccer team continued to pile up victories early in Oregon West Conference play Thursday by posting its fourth straight win.
The Warriors struck twice in the first 25 minutes and added another goal in the opening minute of the second half to post a 3-1 victory at Newport in a game under the lights.
Senior Luke Haslam scored in the 10th minute on a free kick to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Lauded in the past by coach Dave Ellis for his accuracy, Haslam put the ball in the net from 28 yards out.
In the 25th minute, the Warriors scored another goal off the foot of Haslam but also because of the hands of senior Bryce Beeton. Beeton executed a long throw-in that fell to Haslam about 10 yards out and from there he was able to finish for a 2-0 lead.
Philomath went up 3-0 about 45 seconds into the second half with sophomore Mark Grimmer scored with an assist to junior Nick Stucki.
Newport’s goal came about 2 minutes before the final whistle.
For Philomath, it was the program’s first win on the road over Newport since the 2015 season when Clay Youker scored early in the second half and the defense held on over the final 30-plus minutes.
The Warriors (5-2 overall, 4-1 Oregon West) now turn their attention to Woodburn and Stayton in a tough week ahead. Philomath will host Woodburn at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday — note the earlier-than-usual start time — and will play an evening contest Thursday at Stayton with a 6 p.m. start.
Stayton leads the league with a 5-0 record with both Woodburn and Philomath sitting at 4-1.
