PHS boys basketball: Marshall Brattain

Philomath senior Marshall Brattain scored 16 Tuesday at Woodburn.

The Philomath High School boys basketball team will host a Class 4A play-in game at 7 p.m. Friday against La Grande with the winner advancing to the state playoffs.

The Warriors head into the game with an overall record of 12-11 after falling to Woodburn Tuesday night, 52-40, to end the regular season. Philomath went 4-8 in the Oregon West Conference and tied for fourth place.

The Warriors are one of five Oregon West teams to compete in play-in games with three of those schools hosting. Sisters will play at home against Klamath Union, Newport will host Sweet Home and Cascade heads to Valley Catholic.

League champion Stayton and runner-up Woodburn advance directly to the state playoffs.

In the Tuesday loss to Woodburn, the Warriors and Bulldogs were tied at halftime 25-25 but Philomath struggled offensively in the third quarter and got into a hole. Woodburn outscored the Warriors, 9-0, over that eight-minute stretch and went on to the win.

Senior Marshall Brattain had a team-high 16 points on seven field goals and 2 of 5 free throws. Senior Calvin Snuggerud and junior Carter O'Hare each scored eight.

The Warriors were without one of its top scorers in sophomore Michael Lundy, who missed the game because of illness.

RJ Veliz scored a game-high 20 points for Woodburn (20-4 overall, 10-2 Oregon West).

The game remained close throughout with Philomath leading 12-11 at halftime and 20-18 going into the fourth. ... Both team's offenses came alive over the final eight minutes with each hitting for 20 points.
