PHS cross-country: Brody Bushnell

Brody Bushnell, seen here at the Paul Mariman Invitational, placed sixth in the boys' varsity race.

The Philomath High School boys cross-country team placed four runners in the top 10 and won the team title at the inaugural Creekside Cross Classic Wednesday in Salem.

Freshman Brody Bushnell finished sixth in 16:36.80 to finish at Philomath’s top individual among the boys. That time was also a personal-best in a 5-kilometer high school race.

The Warriors then had runners in the 8-9-10 positions with junior Grant Hellesto (16:42.20), senior Brody Gerig (16:42.70) and junior Justin Enghauser (16:43.80). Gerig and Enghauser recorded personal-best times.

Junior Sean Cummings rounded out contributions to the team score with his 23rd place in 17:05.60, just ahead of junior Levi Knutson (24th, 17:06.20) and freshman Mateo Candanoza (26th, 17:17.00) — all PRs.

Philomath scored 55 points for first place to beat out the 63 points compiled by Sisters, another Oregon West Conference school. Oregon City was third, Bend fourth and Canby fifth. Twenty-two schools had full teams and 158 runners participated in the boys’ varsity race.

For the girls, senior Hannah Hernandez finished third with a time of 18:30.60. A pair of freshmen finished ahead of Hernandez with Bend’s Olive Nye winning in 18:15.90 and Sisters’ Ella Thorsett taking second in 18:19.10. Hernandez’s time was a couple of seconds off her season-best and 13 seconds behind her PR.

Senior Rivers Nuno finished 17th in 20:25.20 and freshman Ingrid Hellesto had a PR to come in right behind her in 18th with a time of 20:25.60. Senior Madison Bushnell was 21st in 20:39.30 and sophomore Kaeleigh Houchin rounded out the team scoring with 26th in a PR time of 20:53.80.

Bend took first place in the team race with 74 points and Philomath wasn’t far behind in second with 83 points. Canby took third with West Salem fourth and McKay fifth. Fourteen schools had full teams and the girls’ varsity field featured 119 runners.

Philomath’s teams do not run again until the Nov. 2 Oregon West Championships at Stayton.
