PHS softball: Kaili Saathoff

Philomath sophomore Kaili Saathoff, seen here making a play in center field at a home game earlier this season, went 4 for 5 with a double, home runs and three RBIs in a game Tuesday against 6A Lincoln.

Going up against Class 6A and 5A opponents Tuesday at the Redmond Tournament, the Philomath High School softball team continued to battle through a challenging nonconference schedule that some might just say borders insanity.

But Warriors coach Erik Remington wants his players to gain experience against quality teams in an effort to improve their chances for success within Class 4A, the Oregon West Conference and ultimately, the state playoffs.

Class 6A Lincoln was first up Tuesday in a game on Crook County High's field in Prineville and Philomath lost on a 10-7 decision. The Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run single by Kylie Barnes and then added three more in the second for a 5-0 advantage with Kaili Saathoff going deep on a three-run shot.

Lincoln erupted for seven runs in the third, however, and never trailed the rest of the way.

Saathoff had an exceptional performance at the plate with a 4-for-5 effort that included a double, home run and three RBIs. Kiya Smith went 2 for 4 and the team's other four hits were scattered among four players.

In the team's second game of the day and fourth of the tournament, Philomath dropped a 19-8 decision to unbeaten Ridgeview, a Class 5A school. Incredibly, only five of the 19 runs scored against the Warriors were earned. Philomath had five errors in the game.

Amie Russell hit her third home run of the tournament and fourth of the season in the third inning, a three-run shot. In the fourth, Ashley Matthews connected for a three-run home run.

Hannah Williams was on the mark by going 4 for 4. Russell went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and besides the home run, she also hit a double. Reagan Larson went 2 for 3.

Kamden Combs and Kylie Barnes both made appearances at pitcher. Combs gave up 15 runs but only one was earned.

Philomath (6-5) will take the rest of the week off before resuming Oregon West Conference play Monday at Sisters.
