PHS softball: Kamden Combs

Kamden Combs, seen here last week, threw a four-hitter and had 12 strikeouts in Philomath's 2-1 win over Sweet Home Wednesday.

Playing for the first time since the quarterfinals in last year’s state playoffs, Philomath and Sweet Home met Wednesday afternoon as conference opponents. During the most OSAA realignment, the Huskies were placed in the Oregon West to set up what could be an interesting race for first place.

The Warriors, which beat Sweet Home 8-4 in that playoff game, have the upper hand early on in league play with a 2-1 victory on the Huskies’ home field. It was the third straight victory for Philomath and the team is now 2-0 in league play.

The Warriors scored both of their runs in the first inning. The first two batters, senior Hannah Williams and sophomore Kaili Saathoff, opened the game with singles. Junior Ashley Matthews drove in the first run with a one-out single. Sophomore Kamden Combs then came through with a two-out single to plate Saathoff.

As it turned out, that was the only offense Philomath needed to notch the victory. Combs was in the zone at pitcher and allowed just four hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts.

Sweet Home scored in the fifth inning and threatened to tie it in the sixth by getting a base runner to third with one out. Combs came up with a strikeout for the second out and the inning ended on a grounder to second.

Saathoff went 2 for 4 with the team’s other four hits by Williams, Matthews, Combs and Larson.

Philomath plays Thursday at Cascade.
