On the strength of eight top-three finishes and two champions, the Philomath High School wrestling team finished second Saturday in the Scio Holiday Wrestling Tournament.
Sophomore Connar Kohn and senior Brooks Stearns both earned titles at the 13-school meet. Freshman Blake Niemann, freshman Blaise Pindell, senior Hunter McCaskill, sophomore Austin Murphree and senior Noah Estes all had runner-up finishes. Sophomore Issiah Blackburn placed third.
“Overall, it was a great team effort. We had four wrestlers make it to their first finals in Niemann, Pindell, Murphree and Estes,” PHS coach Troy Woosley said. “A couple more wrestlers got their first career wins.”
Kohn rolled through three straight opponents for first place at 195 pounds. Kohn’s path to the top of the medal stand included pins over Taft’s Jeff Adair, Scio’s Riley Zimmerman and Nestucca’s Conner Cook.
At 220 pounds, Stearns defeated four opponents to take the title. He pinned Amity’s Braedon Bailey, Taft’s Jesse Carrillo and Nestucca’s Isaac Barnes to reach the championship match where he pinned Central Linn’s Jimmy North.
“Kohn and Stearns were dominate in their weight classes with Stearns beating a returning state placer from Central Linn in finals,” Woosley said.
Niemann wrestled in the championship match at 106 pounds after defeating his opponent from Scio in the semifinals on a pin. Yamhill-Carlton’s Reily Liesegang got the win over Niemann for first.
Pindell also had just two matches on the mat in his weight class at 126 with a pin over Santiam Christian’s Austin Bradford in the semis and a loss to Scio’s Kade Mask in the finale.
McCaskill won two of three matches at 138 with wins over Taft’s Riley Ellis and Colton’s Dylan Bonfield and a loss in the finals to Scio’s Lance Vanhoose.
Murphree earned runner-up at 182, reaching finals with pins over Taft’s Victor Carrasco, Scio’s Joseph Nelson and Santiam Christian’s David Choi. In the title bout, he lost by pin to Scio’s Josiah Nordstom.
Estes wrestled just twice at 285 and reached the championship match with a pin over Yamhill-Carlton’s Dylan McInnis. In the finals, he lost on a 6-1 decision to Central Linn’s Justin Malone.
Blackburn opened at 182 with a pin over Yamhill-Carlton’s Carson Bennett but lost in the quarterfinals to Scio’s Nordstom. He came back to pin Taft’s Chris Byrum in the consolation semis and then won the third-place match over Taft’s Carrasco.
Other PHS wrestlers who had victories in bouts that materialized on the mat were senior Morgan French (145), sophomore Garrett Blowers (145), junior Cooper Latz (152), sophomore Matthew Hamlet (160), sophomore Matt Workman (195) and freshman Joseph Choi (220).
Philomath’s three wrestlers all placed and earned points to give the Warriors sixth place in the Springfield Girls Invitational, an event that featured competitors from 25 schools.
Senior Rio Jensen and junior Emma Lalande lost just once on the day but because they lost in early rounds and with the way the brackets were set up, the best they could finish was fifth.
Jensen, wrestling at 120, took a first-round victory over South Medford’s Mckenna Prince in 3:42 before falling in the next round to Reedsport Charter’s Yesenia Valezquez, the eventual runner-up. Jensen responded by pinning Elmira’s Linda Cline and Eureka’s Dulce Pimentel-Hulbert to reach the fifth-place match. In a rematch against Prince, Jensen got the pin in 2:38.
At 155 pounds, Lalande opened with a first-period win over Eureka’s Majesta Ford before falling for a second straight week to Thurston’s Denail Deardorff. But Lalande came right back to pin Oakridge’s Ke-aloni Cole and then in the fifth-place bout, beat South Eugene’s Ruth Jones on a 3-0 decision.
Freshman Reynece Ryan placed fourth with a 1-2 record in the 190-pound division. Ryan won her first bout with a pin in 55 seconds over Lake Oswego’s Katie Cantrell. She lost her next two matches, including for third to Crow’s Tayla Parsons.
The wrestling team now has a bit of a break from competition until the Dec. 22 Molalla Mayhem Tournament. The Warriors will head to Monroe Dec. 27 for this year’s edition of the Benton County Championships.
