Philomath girls win team title, boys finish 2nd and both headed to state

The Philomath High School boys and girls cross-country teams both qualified for state and Hannah Hernandez completed a freshman through senior sweep of Oregon West individual titles with another victory.

The girls won the team title in a very competitive field with 41 points. Stayton finished second at 48 and hard-luck Sisters third at 54. It’s the 38th time in 40 years that Philomath’s girls have advanced to state.

The boys had to settle for runner-up to Sisters. The Warriors had 43 points and finished four points behind the Outlaws. Newport was third with 62 points. Philomath’s boys have gone to state 35 times in the last 36 years.

“No other teams in the state — any division or any sport — can make such a claim,” PHS coach Joe Fulton said in reference to the state-qualifying success. “And to put a punctuation mark on the day, both of our JV teams won their races.”

The state meet is set for Saturday at Lane Community College in Eugene. The meet begins at 10 a.m. with the 4A girls to race at 11:45 a.m. and the 4A boys at 12:20 p.m.

Hernandez won her fourth straight Oregon West Championships in a time of 18:54.56, which was a little more than 10 seconds over Ella Thorsett of Sisters.

“Hannah Hernandez executed a great strategy of ride and kick to win the individual title,” Fulton said. “Rivers Nuno paced the rest of our team through an easy first mile and then took off, moving all the way up to sixth.”

Nuno, a senior, finished in 20:35.94. Freshman Ingrid Hellesto placed 10th (21:06.90), sophomore Kaeleigh Houchin was 11th (21:08.60) and senior Madison Bushnell was 13th (21:22.80) to round out the team score.

Sarah McDaniel (17th, 21:58.66) and sophomore Audrey Gerding (23rd, 22:21.29) also ran on varsity.

Philomath, Sisters and Newport were all serious contenders for the boys’ title. The Warriors finished with four runners in the top 10.

“As it turned out, despite our closely bunched team, Sisters benefited from the top two Newport boys acting as additional ‘pushers’ to nip Philomath for the team title,” Fulton said.

Junior Grant Hellesto placed seventh (16:45.82), junior Justin Enghauser was seventh (16:49.72), senior Brody Gerig ended up eighth (16:51.11) and freshman Brody Bushnell was ninth (16:51.11).

Also contributing to the team score was the 13th-place finish for junior Sean Cummings (17:13.07). Junior Levi Knutson was right behind him in 14th (17:16.58) and senior Noah King finished 17th (17:36.54).
