PHS wrestling: Rio Jensen

Philomath senior Rio Jensen, seen here earlier this season, went 2-2 with two pins at the district tournament.

In this first season of state-sanctioned girls wrestling, Philomath High’s three athletes had what could be considered a pretty good season with a combined 50-19 record.

Freshman Reynece Ryan won 80 percent of her matches with a 12-3 record. Foreign-exchange student Emma Lalande went 22-6 on the season. And senior Rio Jensen ended up with a 16-10 record.

But all three ran into tough competition at Friday and Saturday’s Girls Southern Regional at Thurston High in Springfield and saw their seasons come to an end.

The Oregon School Activities Association staged two regional tournaments — Philomath competing as one of 54 schools in the Southern. Competitors had to finish in the top two to advance to state.

Jensen came into regionals as the No. 5 seed and won two of her four matches at 120 pounds. She opened with a pin over a North Eugene opponent in 1:11 but then lost in the second round to fall into the consolation bracket. There, she started off with a pin in 43 seconds over a Thurston opponent before she was eliminated by a Sweet Home wrestler.

Lalande, who is from Norway, came into the tournament seeded fourth at 145 pounds. She won her first match over a Junction City opponent by forfeit before losing on pins to Elmira and Thurston opponents.

Ryan, also a No. 4 seed coming in, pinned a Thurston grappler in her first match, lost in the second round to a Grants Pass girl and then was eliminated in the consolation bracket by a Crater opponent.
