PHS softball: Tasha Varnado

Philomath's Tasha Varnado bats in the team's home opener last week.

The Philomath High School softball team opened Oregon West Conference play Monday afternoon with a 15-7 victory over Stayton.

The Warriors turned a 2-1 lead into a seven-run lead by scoring six runs in the bottom of the third. After the Eagles battled back to within 10-7 in the top of the sixth, Philomath responded with five in the bottom half to put the game away.

The Warriors pounded out 13 hits and took advantage of nine Stayton errors. Sophomore Kaili Saathoff went 3 for 5 with three runs and two RBIs. Freshman Reagan Larson went 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Senior Amie Russell was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Senior Hannah Williams had a triple and junior Tasha Varnado doubled.

In the circle, sophomore Kamden Combs went the distance. In seven innings, she allowed four earned runs and four walks with five strikeouts.

Philomath (2-2 overall, 1-0 Oregon West) plays Wednesday at Sweet Home.
