PHS volleyball: Claire Skinkis

PHS junior Claire Skinkis had 25 digs against the Huskies.

For the first time in nearly a year, a conference opponent pushed Sweet Home beyond a three-set sweep.

Philomath stunned the home crowd by taking the opening set in convincing fashion but the Huskies regrouped to take the next three in a 17-25, 25-14, 25-16, 25-18 victory Monday night in an Oregon West Conference battle.

Philomath (10-9 overall, 5-3 Oregon West) will play at home Wednesday against Cascade. The first serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Warriors coach Denee Newton said the team “played tough and are definitely making improvements in areas of their game.”

Sophomore Sage Kramer had a team-high 10 kills to lead what Newton described as a well-rounded attack. Junior Claire Skinkis finished with 25 digs. Senior Megan Harper had five blocks.

Sweet Home saw some streaks come to an end with the match against Philomath. The last time the Huskies didn’t sweep an Oregon West foe was Oct. 15, 2018, in a five-set victory over Sisters. And this season, it’s the first time Sweet Home didn’t sweep its opponent in a match that ended as a Huskies victory.

Philomath appears to have a stronghold on third place in the league standings and if that remains through the regular season, the Warriors would likely host a play-in match. But there’s plenty of volleyball to be played before the postseason with conference matches remaining against Cascade, Sisters, Woodburn and Newport.
