PHS wrestling: Brooks Stearns

Brooks Stearns, seen here last season, reached the third-place match in his weight division Saturday at the Perry Burlison Wrestling Classic.

Philomath senior Brooks Stearns and sophomore Connar Kohn each placed fourth at Saturday’s Perry Burlison Wrestling Classic at Cascade High School near Turner.

The season-opening tournament featured 26 schools from various classifications. Class 5A Crook County easily won the meet. Sweet Home, which is in 4A Special District 2 with Philomath, had an impressive runner-up showing just ahead of 5A Crescent Valley. The Warriors tied for 14th with Cottage Grove.

Stearns and Kohn both advanced into third-place matches at the tournament but did not wrestle. In both cases, their opponents had reached the maximum number of matches of five in one day. Stearns did have a 4-1 record on the day but he didn’t compete in one of those, a medical forfeit victory.

Stearns, competing at 220 pounds, opened with an 11-8 win over Cooper Hise of Dallas. After losing on a second-period pin against Silverton’s Owen Magill, he fought back for consolation round victories over Tigard’s Brandon Baker on a pin in 1:56 and over McKay’s Giovanni Perez-Alejandre in 4:19.

Stearns was awarded the medical forfeit over North Salem’s Antonio Garcia to advance to the third-place match against Lebanon’s Keith Brown. Since the bout couldn’t take place, the tournament officially lists each wrestler as tying for fourth.

Kohn won his first two matches at 195 to reach the semifinals. In his first bout, Kohn pinned McMinnville’s Jayson Jarvis in just 26 seconds. In the quarterfinals, he pinned Central’s Gabe Cervantes in 3:52.

In the semis, however, Kohn ran into the top seed and eventual champion, Jaxson Rhoden of Crook County, and lost on a pin in 2:25. Kohn won by rule over Cascade’s Matthew Clark to reach the third-place match. His opponent would’ve been Elmira’s Nat Brown, who had a 4-1 record at that point in the tournament.

Freshman Blake Niemann, freshman Blaise Pindell, senior Jayden Jensen and sophomore Austin Murphree each scored points toward the team total. Of those four wrestlers, Murphree, was the only one to win a bout that actually materialized on the mat.

Wrestling at 160, Murphree pinned South Salem’s Jordan Johnson in 1:42 in a consolation match.

Niemann at 106 and Pindell at 126 both had wins on medical forfeits. Jensen was awarded a forfeit victory at 160 over a would-be opponent from Tigard.

As mentioned, Sweet Home was the top 4A Special District 2 team at the meet, scoring 195 points, followed by Cascade (72), Junction City (55), Philomath (48), Elmira (42) and Stayton (13).

Philomath will see its next action Saturday at the Scio Holiday Wrestling Tournament.

Philomath High placed sixth in the girls tournament with 41 points. Thurston won with 195 with Sweet Home second (89) and Elmira third (57). This is the first season of girls wrestling as an OSAA-sanctioned sport.

Freshman Reynece Ryan won the 190-pound weight class with pins over Junction City’s Jessica Hodgson in 1:38 and 13 seconds. Ryan and Hodgson were the only two competitors in the weight class and so they wrestled twice.

Senior Rio Jensen had a runner-up finish at 125 pounds. Jensen opened with a pin in 4:23 over Thurston’s Hayley Cohn and followed with a pin over Elmira’s Linda Cline in 2:57. In the championship bout, Sweet Home’s Jessy Hart pinned Jensen in 2:00.

In the 155-pound class, foreign-exchange student Emma Lalande placed third with a 2-1 record. Lalande opened with a pin over Scappoose’s Belle Erhardt in 2:38. In the semifinals, she lost to Thurston’s Denali Deardorff in 37 seconds but regrouped to win the third-place match over Thurston’s Maggie Petersen with a pin in 1:10.

The girls will now head to a tournament Saturday at Springfield.
