PHS softball: Amie Russell

Philomath's Amie Russell, seen here with her home run stroke during a home game, went deep twice Monday in the Redmond Tournament.

Scoring just four runs in its previous three games combined, the Philomath High School softball team needed to break out at the plate.

Based on what the Warriors accomplished Monday at the Redmond Tournament, it's safe to say the offensive slump has ended.

Philomath had a combined 29 runs and 37 hits in victories of 12-11 in eight innings over Scappoose and 17-7 in six innings over North Bend.

In the team's first game, Philomath took an 11-8 lead into the bottom of the seventh only to see Scappoose battle back and force extras. But freshman Reagan Larson answered with a solo home run to lead off the top of the eighth and Kamden Combs struck out the final two batters in the bottom half to give Philomath the victory.

The Warriors had 10 extra-base hits in the contest, including three home runs. Hannah Williams and Amie Russell went deep in addition to the Larson homer.

Kaili Saathoff went 4 for 6 with three RBIs, two triples and a double. Tasha Varnado was 4 for 5 with a double. Russell finished 3 for 6 with four RBIs, a homer and a double. Williams was 2 for 5 with a home run and a double. Kiya Smith was 2 for 3. Lara Hunter was 1 for 1 with a double.

Kylie Barnes and Combs each threw four innings in the circle.

In the second game, Philomath trailed 7-4 through three innings before erupting for 10 in the fourth inning. The Warriors went on to end it after six on the 10-run rule.

Saathoff continued to have a hot bat with a 4-for-5 effort with four RBIs and a triple. Williams went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two doubles. Russell was 3 for 4 with four RBIs and a two-run home run in the sixth. Larson finished 3 for 4 with two triples. Varnado was 2 for 3 and Smith went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a double.

Barnes threw four innings and Combs finished up with the last two, allowing one hit and no runs.

Philomath (6-3) will play Tuesday at 9 a.m. against Lincoln at Crook County High School and at 11:30 a.m. at Ridgeview.
