PHS swimming: James Dye

James Dye, senior, had two good swims at Saturday's White Buffalo Classic at Madras.

The Philomath High School boys and girls swim teams competed Saturday at the White Buffalo Classic in Madras and came away with some exceptional performances.

Warriors coach Marrisa Eng said the athletes had some outstanding swims.

“Madras is a little higher elevation than Philomath is, so the oxygen can be a little tricky to get used to,” she said. “But the kids swam really, really great. We had some all-time best times.”

The boys finished fourth at the meet with 41 points behind Newport (123), Pendleton (53) and La Grande (48) and ahead of four other schools. The girls were fifth with 19 points behind La Grande (106), Pendleton (60), Baker (55) and Madras (35).

Among the individuals, Eng mentioned seniors Brandon Enghauser and James Dye, as well as freshman Kaeleigh Houchin.

“Brandon Enghauser killed it in his 200 free and 500 free,” Eng said. “He swam very smart and had aggressive and his hard work is paying off.”

Enghauser placed sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:12.75) and sixth in the 500 freestyle (6:06.48).

Dye, who has hopes for high placings at this year’s state swim meet, had a strong finish in the 200-yard freestyle for second place in 1:54.36 with Newport's Lucas Ellingson-Cosenza winning in 1:53.76. In the 100-yard butterfly, Dye was second with a 59.81.

“He raced really well and there was some great competition coming from Newport and La Grande and Baker,” Eng said. “It was really quite a wide range of competition. It was fun to see him race against competition he usually doesn’t see.”

Among the others that placed for the boys, Tristan Pindell was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.40) and third in the 200 individual medley (2:22.37). In the relays, Philomath's boys placed third in the 200 medley (1:53.77) and the 200 freestyle (1:57.27), and fifth in the 400 freestyle (2:22.37). Philomath does not list relay members' names in results.

For the girls, Amity Coon took fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.34) and Maggie Ross placed fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:18.15).

The 200 freestyle relay for the PHS girls finished third (1:59.26) and the 200 medley relay was fourth (2:18.07).

Houchin is one of the team’s newcomers as a freshman.

“She swam her first 500 fee and she did a great job cutting 10 seconds off her 100 breaststroke,” Eng said.

Eng said the Madras meet served as a weekend bonding experience for the team.

“This group that went, they found a cohesiveness and energy to help them tackle the last third of the season,” Eng said. “I’m excited to see after the memories and the hard work from this weekend how that pays out over the rest of the season.”

Philomath will host a tri-meet at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Clemens Community Pool. The Warriors then head to the Albany Community Pool at 8 a.m. Saturday for the Albany Sprint Invitational.
