PHS baseball: Brooks Stearns

Philomath's Brooks Stearns is hitting .692 through seven games this season.

The Philomath High School baseball team extended its winning streak to five games Monday with a pair of victories in the Yaquina Bay Classic at Newport.

The Warriors took victories of 18-10 over Douglas and 15-2 in five innings over Estacada.

In the first game, Philomath broke a 6-6 tie in the fourth inning with eight runs, which proved to be the final difference on the scoreboard. Dylan Bennett had a bases-loaded, three-run triple to highlight the fourth.

In the fifth, Brooks Stearns hit a solo home run.

Stearns went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, the home run and a double. The team's other seven hits were scattered among seven players. Bennett had that triple and five RBIs while Cameron Ordway and Calvin Snuggerud each drove in two. Brody Hiner had a double.

Brandn Vogler got the win at pitcher. In four innings, he allowed five hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Adam Hernandez relieved and went three innings, allowing one hit and five walks with two strikeouts.

In the team's second game of the day, Philomath erupted for 12 runs in the first inning in what ended up as a 15-2 victory in five innings.

Marshall Brattain threw a one-hitter with two walks and three strikeouts.

At the plate, Stearns went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and two doubles. Michael Slater was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and a double. Hernandez finished 2 for 3. Hiner and Brian McClelland each had three RBIs. McClelland and Bennett also hit doubles.

Philomath (5-2) plays Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. against Dallas.
