The Philomath High boys won their second straight district title and the girls pulled off an unforeseen feat by qualifying two doubles teams for state in the past week’s results out of Black Butte Ranch near Sisters.

In Thursday’s action, Philomath’s doubles team of Nick Stucki and Luke Haslam defeated their opponents from Molalla in the semifinals to set up a showdown with Esteban Gomez and Tony Giron of Madras in the championship match.

Gomez and Giron had beaten Stucki and Haslam during the regular season in straight sets but the Warriors duo came through when it counted to give Philomath a doubles champion for the second straight year.

In singles, Philomath’s Colton Beckstead defeated Molalla’s Lucas Kendrup in the semifinals but fell to Cascade’s Ben Suezle in the finals. Beckstead now moves on to the state tournament.

Dylan Bell took the district tournament’s consolation crown with victories over Woodburn’s Roman Sommil in the semis and Sisters’ Keaton Green in the finale. The consolation players do not advance to state but it was a strong finish for the Warriors freshman.

In all, Philomath piled up 30 points to win the team title over runner-up Cascade, which had 23.

The girls, meanwhile, advance the doubles teams of Lindsay Schell and Ella Skinkis, and Claire Skinkis and Amelia Skinkis, to the state tournament. The two Philomath teams actually had to play each other in the semifinals Thursday with Schell and Ella Skinkis getting the win and advancing to the championship match.

In the doubles finale, Schell and Skinkis lost to a team from Madras. Claire and Amelia Skinkis played in the third-place match and defeated a team out of Cascade.

The state tournament is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Oregon State University.
