PHS tennis: Colton Beckstead

Philomath's Colton Beckstead qualified as a singles player for the state tennis tournament for a second straight year.

Three Philomath High doubles teams and a singles player have qualified for the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state tennis tournament.

Two of the three boys headed to state are making return appearances. No. 1 singles player Colton Beckstead, a junior, qualified again by defeating Woodburn’s Vladimir Gridinar and Cascade’s Jacob Sturgeon. Junior Luke Haslam also makes it again but this time with a different doubles partner. Haslam and sophomore Nick Stucki defeated opponents from Molalla and Cascade to punch their ticket.

Philomath’s girls, meanwhile, will send two doubles teams to state for the first time ever. The No. 1 doubles team of Lindsay Schell and Ella Skinkis defeated opponents from Stayton and Molalla to qualify. The No. 2 doubles team of Claire Skinkis and Amelia Skinkis also made it after defeating foes from Sisters and Cascade.

All of the state qualifiers advance to Thursday’s finals at Black Butte Ranch to battle it out for district titles.

In other results for the boys, No. 2 singles player James Erickson won his first match over a Sisters opponent but lost to a Cascade foe. No. 4 singles player Noah Aynes lost to a Woodburn opponent.

The No. 2 doubles team of Bryce Beeton and Nathaniel Workman went 1-1 with a win over Sisters and a loss to Molalla. The No. 3 duo of Jeremy Alston and Alec Stucki lost to a Madras pair.

For the girls, No. 1 singles player Selah Carlisle defeated Woodburn’s Janet Jimenez but lost to Cascade’s Ariel Tobiason. No. 3 singles player Madison Francis lost to a Corbett opponent.

The No. 4 doubles team of Kena Bacho and Ashlynn Wulk lost to a Madras team.
