PHS volleyball: Megan Harper

The Philomath High School volleyball team got off to a 1-0 start in the Oregon West Conference and improved to 3-1 overall with a three-set sweep Tuesday evening at Stayton.

The Warriors won the opening set by three points but took care of business in the second and third sets by comfortable margins. Philomath won 25-22, 25-14 and 25-18.

PHS coach Denee Newton described the match as a display of the Warriors’ “blocking game.”

Freshman Abigail Brown had four blocks for kills and senior Megan Harper had three block kills while sophomore Sage Kramer and senior Joelle Berger each had two block kills.

In the hitting department, Kramer had a team-high 11 kills while Berger and senior Emma Pankalla each finished with nine.

Pankalla and junior Claire Skinkis were exceptional on the serve receive with a 2.10 and 2.12 ratings. Serve receive ratings are based on a 0 to 3 scale (3 being perfect or near perfect and 0 being an ace or an over-pass). Newton said that a score of 1.9 or better is considered good.

Philomath now prepares for an important showdown on Thursday against Sweet Home, the league’s defending champions. The Huskies are unbeaten at 5-0, including a league win Tuesday over Woodburn, 25-9, 25-14, 25-10.

The Warriors and Huskies will meet at 6 p.m. in the PHS gym.
